How much time is required for a typical photo shoot?
It really depends on what you want. For example, I usually allow 1-2 hours for engagements, couples, family portraits. Weddings can really range in time. I suggest 8-10 hours for a wedding. My basic package includes 8 hours of coverage, but you tell me what you want and we won’t leave until we’ve got it!
Is your wife a photographer too?
Yes and No. For most of my weddings this year she has been my second shooter and she has been amazing. It is awesome working as a husband and wife team. For 2012 she will be serving the role as a mama to our amazing lil guy more often, but will shoot with me occasionally. I have a few different photographers that I use as 2nd shooters on a regular basis. Each run their own business and are super talented.
Do you require a retainer? Is there a contract involved?
Yes and YES. You will need to pay 1/3 of the total in the beginning to reserve the date. The remaining 2/3’s of the total will be owed, 14 days before the wedding. The contract is simple. It just makes sure that you and I are on the same page, that we don’t miss any details. I want to give you pictures that will last you a lifetime. It is a huge investment and therefore I want all your desires in writing.
Do you ever travel outside of San Diego?
Yes, we love to travel. You tell me where you want me.. and I will be there! Local, National, or International- There are no boundaries. I am a simple guy. All I need is a cheap flight and a bed to sleep in. I am not high-maintenance.
What happened with Baseball?
Well, long story short, I pursued baseball for 22 years of my life. I played college ball at Baylor University. My senior year I was drafted with the Houston Astros. I played in the minor leagues for 4+ years, got hurt in spring training and shortly after was released. I have decided that that was a closed door for a reason. I definitely still love the game of baseball and enjoy playing just for fun. I love coaching at the high school level.
Do you include a second shooter for weddings?
Yes. I always suggest it, because it really adds to the full dimension of the day. But if you are having an intimate, simple wedding- a second shooter isn’t always necessary. It is really up to you.
What gear do you use?
I am a Canon guy. I use a Canon 5D Mark III and my wife shoots the Canon 5D. I love both of them. The new Canon 5d Mark III is truly amazing in low light settings and perfect for weddings. Both cameras truly make my job mindless and fun. I use Canon’s best lenses from the L series line. I absolutely love using prime lenses such as the 50mm f/1.2 and the 35mm f/1.4. They allow me to push the envelope of creatvitiy. I also LOVE the Canon 70-200/2.8L IS. I continue the development in programs such as Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CS4.
